Fifty $ Friend
The urban funk band, Fifty Dollar Friend, asked Amélie to create an iconic logo that embodied their music and style.
Challenges
Prince, Kiss, Nirvana. What do they all have in common? An iconic logo that each generation can identify whether they listen to them or not. Fifty Dollar Friend might have the notes to get a crowd to listen, but they needed branding to grow their recognition. That’s where Amélie stepped in. With a rough-sketched idea on a napkin, the band approached us to build a branding identity that would not only help unify them as a group, but would help their awareness and reach amongst new and old fans.
Solutions
To create the logo for Fifty Dollar Friend, we embarked on an exploratory journey into the world of funk bands, delving into the rich visual and cultural history that defines the genre. We studied iconic logos and album covers from classic and contemporary artists, noting recurring elements like bold typography, colors, and playful iconography. We also took into account the band’s personal style and sound. This research provided a foundation of design principles, which we then tailored to reflect the unique aesthetic and persona of Fifty Dollar Friend. The band’s music exudes a lively, energetic feel, with a hint of retro nostalgia, so we chose a color palette that paid homage to iconic artists who the band has said they have drawn inspiration from like Prince, The Who and ACDC. The typography was selected to be approachable with being hand-drawn, yet still feel modern and clean, reflecting the band’s contemporary twist on classic funk. The final logo encapsulates the spirit of Fifty Dollar Friend, combining elements of the vibrant visual identity of their music along with the band’s distinctive personality.
Results
While we don’t have traditional campaign metrics or KPI’s to prove success, our F$F client now has an iconic logo mark to distinguish themselves within their genre and help promote their band with some stylish swag at shows.
