As the population and traffic have steadily increased in recent years, so have pedestrian deaths. In an effort to save lives, CDOT and Amélie brought a familiar figure to the forefront: Fred Estrian, the walking man from the crosswalk signal. Drivers and pedestrians alike had stopped yielding to his signal, and far too many pedestrians were disregarding crosswalks altogether, greatly increasing their chances of being struck by a vehicle. Fred was more than ready to take his message from the signal to the streets.
We reintroduced Fred to the public through a series of animated shorts then turned him loose in-person at some of Denver’s most well-trafficked intersections to engage pedestrians and drivers on the importance of using and respecting crosswalks. Pedestrians and drivers weren’t the only one’s to take notice.
